Searching for Eldorado

"Searching for Eldorado" is a photo web project which aims to give a public voice and means of self-representation to children and young people living in the impoverished community of Eldorado on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The children and young people involved in the project have the opportunity to document, with photos and other images, whatever aspect of their lives and community they feel is important. These images and accompanying stories will form the content of the site which will, therefore, reflect the children and young people’s perspective of their own reality.

The project aims to increase the self-confidence and self-esteem of the young people in a community that suffers from overwhelming social exclusion by allowing them to reflect on what is important to them and provide them with a means to represent this in the public forum of the World Wide Web. The issues addressed include both social and digital inclusion. The project increases the young people’s familiarity with the internet and introduces the World Wide Web as an accessible resource for information and a viable means of communication. In the future it is hoped that this website could be linked to a number of other similar websites, in other diverse communities, forming a forum for global communication.
